I love Korea, but like many things my time here will come to an end. I am not planning on naturalizing at any point and you can never become a citizen here unless you are married to a Korean and even then it's difficult. Well, I am not married to a Korean so that puts that out. The state of Native teaching is deteriorating. Easy access to jobs are becoming scarcer as native Koreans grow up into qualified bilingual candidates. Paul Finch's lecture the "The End of Native Teaching," at the KOTESOL National Conference was a sober reminder of this .
Native teaching was ended in Malaysia and it will happen here. What things are you doing to preparing for the shift?
For one thing, an MA and certification and being bilingual is necessary to achieve in the next decade to stay in teaching. If you aren't willing to commit to this then you should prepare for eventually being out competed in the market by more qualified candidates. That's hard to say, because its true.
I will get these things. I could see me getting the teaching certification and I need and staying in teaching for 5 more years.
But this is not my life's calling. And I wouldn't say I teaching is my passion. The challenge of the students and getting up in front of people. My calling is in herbalism. However, the best place to be for me to be here right here, for now.
When I will leave Korea, I can't say, but I will move away from teaching eventually and more into herbalism. Eventually things will shift, and I might not have much say in the matter.
Food for thought.
What is your plan for the future?
