Dale Pendell author of the Pharmako series has said this about open which I think fits nicely to many addctions.
"Lenny Bruce said:
You gotta pay dues.
Or bills. The bills will wait for you on the desk, opened or unopened. In some cases the interest compounds There are social dues and there are spiritual dues, there are spiritual dues, there are mundane bills like the one from the gas company and esoteric bills such as the phantom afterimage left by a lost opportunity.
You gotta pay dues.
On the physiological plane, addiction researchers have confirmed what Louis Lewin intuited half a century earlier.
It is conceivable that the impulse and the activity of regulating processes against foreign influences is enacted according to a scientific principle which has been termed by d' Alembert, Gauss, and later by Le Chatetelier, the Law of Resistance to Contraint, and which applies to chemical and physical processes, It may be thus stated: If to a system in an equilibrium a contraint by applied, a change takes place within the system tending to nullify the effect of the constraint and to restore the equilbrium.
-Louise Lewin, Phantastica
In response to continued flooding of the endorphin receptors by opiates, the brain new receptor sites. Any reduction than in the amount of moprhine leaves the brain in disequilibrium on the excess of pain side."
