In the late Spring at the Maine Primitive Skills School in Augusta, Maine I removed several ticks from my body within the 24 hour infection period for Lyme's Disease.
Several of instructors and apprentices had had bouts of Lyme Disease during my stay. We were informed about the Stephen Buhner Lyme Protocal to treat the symptoms of Lyme Disease such as fatigue, arthritic pain and
Recently, I have been concerned about a creeping infection of the disease so I have reviewed Stephen Buhner's recommendation. There are good reasons for this.
An infection can go undetected. In fact, the blood test for the disease is unreliable. Because of this many doctors recommend treatment with anti-biotics right away after being bitten by a tick before the results of the test. However, there is no agreement between M.D.s on the length of the treatment.
The bacteria itself is a tricky organism that will encyst itself when under an anti-biotic attack. Therefore, people tested for signs of infection and get negative test results may still be infected and will get another bout of it in the future.
The following is from a website started by supporters of Buhner's Protocal. Many people are suffering from Chronic Lymes and anti-biotics aren't working so the Buhner Protocal has come with relief.
What I've come to learn about herbalism in the last few years is that it is no joke. There are powerful plants out there and people who have an understanding of their power. The plants in Buhner's protocal share anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory actions and work synergistically to fight the infection.
Note I am not a doctor but I am sharing with you what I am doing.
At Maine Primitive Skills School, I took a tea of Japanese Knotweed when I started to feel tired or sick until I didn't. This was down at the recommendation of an instructor who limits his protocal to the Japanese Knotweed tea when he has a bout of Lyme.
From September to February when living on a friend's farm in Jeju, I took garlic when I felt problems with my stomach.
Now recently having moved to Wonju and with more resources I can follow the Buehner Protocal.
To be more consistent with my busy schedule I plan on taking these herbs in capsule forms for the next few months. I don't have a confirmed diagnosis of Lyme Disease. I am being safe.
• Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) (Source Naturals Resveratrol with 500mg Polygonum cuspidatum per tablet) - 1-4 tablets 3-4x daily for 8-12 months;
• Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) (Raintree) - 1-4 tablets 3-4x daily for 2-3 months, then 2-3 capsules 3x daily;
• Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) (HerbPharm tincture) - 1/2 to 1 tsp upon rising and at lunch;
• Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) - 1,000mg daily (not to be used in chronic lyme)
Ashwagandha (withania) to help remedy sleep problems at night and brain fog - 1000 mg at night just before bed.
Here is Buehner's site which is not run by himself, but by the folks at Planet Thrive: http://buhnerhealinglyme.com/
It is important to note that these herbs do have a toxic effect at a certain dosage so those who wish to treat their Lyme Disease should be aware of this.
