I am trying to make all my meals at home so I don’t have to spend so much money while out on healthy foods. I’m trying to eat mostly organic with flexibility for meals with friends and with my school. With all my activities I could eat 6 or 7 small meals a day. When traveling about as much as I do I have no problem to buy cheap bad quality quick foods.
Not Fast Food
My lunch today, kimchi and black and brown rices mixed together with seaweed, sesame oil, and fresh eggs. |
There was a time when Gimbap was a great snack in the beginning of my time here for a while. These day I've set out over the past months to eat more organic for my health.
So after that I was spending a lot of money on better quality foods but none on offer really did the job of a good Korean slow meal. I don't have the time and space for this all the time.
I've re-discovered the fast foods that people made before McDonald's which are quick to make and or portable and much healthier. These all are mostly organic.
Organic is questionable in cases but there are good sources for organic out there and I've been finding them with help from blogger's Meepe and Mike, healthyasianhomes.kr and from stumbling into them. I've also done a lot of research on the origin of plants and why so many chemicals are used to grow them. In general most of the plants we eat are domesticated and don't exist in the wild, similar to dogs and wolves. Genetically they are the same but certain characteristics are bred into them which can make them look really oddly different. It's odd to think that wolves and man are the same. Humans breed our domesticated species for sweetness. If you this is good to keep in mind when buying food that isn't organic because the sweeter the food the harder it is to grow without human intervention.
Back to fast foods though. I've found my solution in Jumok Bap and Sourdough breads. Both quick to make and portable.
Jumok Bap
Jumok Bap was made from the left over from the mix for my lunch box and pressed into balls. |

Sour Dough Muffins
These English muffins were so good they were eaten in a day. |
Starter Day 1
My starter took about a week to get a really good flavor and is really easy to make, just flour and water. |
I mixed the starter with some flour the night before and then in the morning added some sugar salt baking soda and water in the morning. |
Cooking them was easy. I just shaped them and roasted in my cast iron pan for a few minutes. |
I planning on making more of these soon.
These Rice Cakes given to me from a parent are not quick to make but they are tasty.
The coloring is from Mugwort, a wild harvested and medicinal plant. |
